TOP 10 SUPERFOODS: Blueberries, salmon, kale and acai

Superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Eating them may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and prolong life, and people who eat more of them are healthier and thinner than those who don't. Read about several foods that are considered super, what health benefits they offer, and how to fit them into your diet.

Superfoods are known to be rich in nutrients, providing the body the most benefiting nutrients.

Blueberries, salmon, kale and acai are just a few examples of foods that have garnered the "superfood"

Superfoods contain a variety of nutrients, such as antioxidants, which are thought to ward off cancer. They also have healthy fats, thought to prevent heart disease; fiber, thought to prevent diabetes and digestive problems; and phytochemicals — the chemicals in plants responsible for deep colors and smells, which can have numerous health benefits.

From chia seeds to flaxseed and even hemp seeds, these small-but-mighty snacks are nutritional powerhouses. They’re loaded with dietary fiber, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

2) Blueberries

Williams says this superfood contains high levels of phytochemicals—including flavonoids, anthocyanins, and resveratrol—that help the body combat inflammation naturally. Other research has shown blueberries to cut risk of heart disease and cancer, as well as memory loss. Not bad for a little berry!

3) Salmon

You'll get all the heart-healthy omega-3s you need in a day by eating a 3-ounce piece of salmon for dinner.

4) Avocados

Did you know that avocados have even more potassium than bananas? The healthy fat in avocado also keeps you satisfied and helps you absorb other nutrients. So go ahead and have all of the guac you want on Taco Tuesday!

5) Spinach

A half-cup of spinach provides more than five times your daily dose of vitamin K, which helps blood clot and builds strong bones, according to Medical News Today.

6) Edamame

One cup of edamame has a whopping 18 grams of plant protein, as well as lots of fiber, folate, and cholesterol-lowering phytosterols.

7) Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes deliver a healthy dose of vitamin A, which protects your vision and immune system.

8) Flaxseed

is loaded with plant omega-3s, which are good for your heart health, according to WebMD. Store ground flaxseed in your refrigerator and sprinkle on yogurt, cold cereal, oatmeal, or avocado toast.

9) Asparagus

A half-cup of asparagus supplies 50% of your daily bone-building vitamin K and a third of your day's folate. And since they're a natural diuretic, it banishes bloating, too.

10) Lentils

A great source of meat-free protein, a half-cup of cooked lentils gives you your daily dose of folate, a B vitamin that protects a woman's unborn baby from neural tube defects.
